The Carpenter's Kids Program is a partnership between the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the Diocese of Central Tanganyika, Tanzania in an effort to educate orphaned, vulnerable and at risk children. Public schools are provided by the Tanzanian government, but children must wear a uniform and shoes, and supply their own materials. It was estimated that there were 40,000 children in the Diocese of Central Tanganyika orphaned through HIV/AIDs and other diseases who would never be able to afford to go to school.
Today we are sending over 6,500 children to school with the help of our partners: The Diocese of Atlanta, The Diocese of Virginia and The Diocese of Rochester; churches in Long Island (St. Mark's Westhampton Beach), California, Canada and Australia; individuals in New York and Colorado; and a company in New Jersey.
